Four Things Every 20 Year Old Should Know
I love talking to young people. In them, I see my younger self—passionate, competitive, full energy.
I was once as young as them. When I was their age, I was lucky enough to meet people who were willing to teach me valuable life lessons.
Did you know?
While it is never too late to start chasing your dreams, you should still be wary of all your life decisions. 80% of all major decisions in your life will be made before you are 35 years old.
The first ten years in your career will have a huge impact on your long term goals.
Furthermore, many people meet their life partners in their 20s. Our brain also ends its final stage of growth before we hit 30. As such, our youth is an important phase of personal development. You have to think hard about the kind of life you want to live at this age.
1.Learn from those who are better
It is important to surround yourself with the right company, since it will make you a better person. I once read an article on child growth that argues that human IQ can be improved. It also says that hanging around intelligent people can really rub off on you too. This is easy to prove: just look at the company that great people surround themselves with.
If you are already intelligent, it does not mean you should stay stagnant. I suggest you participate in activities, conferences, and get to know people from different fields. Keep learning!
2. Even geniuses need to work hard
Success does not come by chance for most people. Just look at how much work people like Bill Gates, Mozart, and Thomas Edison had to put in to achieve what they did.
If you want to be the best, you need to know what to prioritise. Give up things that do not help you. For example, if you want to be a great salesperson, than the most important thing is to develop relationships. If you spend most of your time replying emails, you would not be able to progress fast enough.
3. Learning is a life-long process
I have previously introduced the reading list of people such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. Successful people do not stop learning.
A leading research has found that 42% of university graduates stop reading books after they graduate. Therefore, just by reading, you would have already surpassed many of your peers. With the knowledge you have, your brain will be much more able to organise knowledge. Always remember this: never stop improving, because others are not stopping either.
4. Be happy with being yourself
Too many youngsters pick their career paths based on how much money they can make. Have you ever thought of how much this could limit your life?
Steve Jobs once said: your work will take up the biggest chunk of your life. The only way you can be truly happy is to do things that you think are great. The only way to do great things, is by doing things you love. If you have not find it, keep looking.
I agree with Jobs. Young people should pursue what they love, so life can be much more meaningful. If you haven’t found your passion, don’t worry. Keep looking, and you will find it eventually.
